Genres

Please ensure you have fully read our information on genres and rules within these categories. If we feel a piece has been entered in the wrong category, we reserve the right to move it to the correct category. Our decision would be final in that case.

CLASSICAL BALLET

Our Classical Ballet section is suitable for all age groups. Classical Ballet is technically executed with beautiful artistry but should be clearly represented as a classical style. Pointe work is allowed for Teens and Seniors but their teachers must sign a physical declaration to state that the student is skilled enough and trains enough hours each week to perform their routine safely. No acro or contortion is allowed within the classical Ballet section. Any moves of this style will result in a mark down of 5 points per judge.

Costumes do not have to be tutu’s, however they should accurately represent the classical style in which Ballet is presented. Hair should be neatly off the face and in a classical style.

CONTEMPORARY

Our Contemporary dance section is for Minis and above. This style should show strong technique and allow for strong interpretive movements. No more than two Acro tricks may be used within contemporary dance. 5 points per judge will be deducted if you add more than two tricks. Any tricks that are included should work seamlessly within the choreography.

Costumes for Contemporary should be representive of the tone of the piece being danced. Hairstyles may also be more relaxed for this style and may be worn down if preferred as long as it is safe for the choreography and won’t interfere with their performance.

LYRICAL

Our Lyrical dance section is suitable for all ages. This genre is based in classical ballet technique but with more fluidity and story telling. No acro-style tricks may be used in this section. 3 points per judge will be deducted if you add any tricks. Showing flexibility, such as splits is allowed, but contortion is not.

Costuming and hair may be more relaxed than classical ballet as long as it is safe for the choreography and won’t interfere with their performance. The same goes for costuming. Costumes should compliment the piece and the story telling within the piece.

TAP DANCE

The Tap section is suitable for all age groups. This style should bring together excellent rhythmic understanding and timing along with beautiful and clean artistry within the dance. Floor mics will be used so their routines can be heard clearly over the accompanying music. Music should not contain any pre-recorded tap sounds.

Costuming should be worn appropriately for the style of tap being competed. Hair may be worn in a style suited to the piece as long as it is safe for the choreography and won’t interfere with their performance.

JAZZ & MODERN

The Jazz and Modern is suitable for students in Mini’s and upwards. This section brings together energy, technique and performance quality. Routines in this section may contain a maximum of three Acro moves such as cartwheels, aerials etc. We are looking for great performance and energy as well as precise and controlled delivery of choreography.

Costumes should be fitting for the style and song choice. Hair may be worn to suit the style as it is safe for the choreography and won’t interfere with their performance.

MUSICAL THEATRE

ACTING THROUGH SONG: This section gives those who are strong actors and singer the opportunity to bring to life a character within their performance. A large emphasis is placed on storytelling and characterisation in this section. There shouldn’t be any dancing but slight/small movements to compliment the character are deemed acceptable as long as it doesn’t hinder vocal performance. This section is suitable for students in Mini’s upwards.

SONG AND DANCE: This section allows students to perform as a “triple threat” bringing together singing, acting and dancing in their piece. The piece should aim to be approximately 50% signing and 50% dancing. Throughout they should maintain their character and storytelling to enhance their performance further. This section is suitable for all age groups.

Costumes, hair and makeup for these sections should be appropriate to the character they are portraying.

POETRY, MONOLOGUES & ACTING

Our Poetry, Monologue and Acting section is from students in the Mini’s age group and upwards. Within these sections we are looking for excellent diction, acting and characterisation throughout their delivery. The piece of choice should be appropriate for the age of the student(s) and a costume fitting of the piece can be worn.
